Is it time to quit your job Heres how to tell. - When I Grow Up

Is it time to quit your job Heres how to tell. - When I Grow Up As The When I Grow Up Coach, Ive heard it all when it comes to deplorable work situations. Quotas that are impossible to reach. Being spoken to in a way that counts as verbal abuse. Bad reviews that come without merit or explanation. Sexual harassment that has no consequences. But despite obviously toxic work environments, you hear a voice in the back of your mind that says, But I need the money! And how will I ever find something else in this economy? I should feel grateful for this job! The devil I  know is better than the one I dont, thats for sure! And so you hang in there while your soul gets sucked and your energy depletes and you become a non-stop bitching machine. And you wonder, Should I jump ship? Heres how you know its quitting time: You have The Uh-Oh Feeling.  The Uh-Oh Feeling  is that  sensation you get in your gut when you know something’s wrong, even if you can’t figure out exactly what it is. You dont have to pinpoint the cause of that sixth sense just having it says enough about what youre (not) getting from your job. This is also true for a situation where you weigh out the Pros Cons, and even though the Pros win, the Cons feel so heavy you think they should count more. On paper, your job may seem to be great (or at least better than the alternative) but in your gut, something is very, very wrong. You feel physically ill.  My breaking point came one morning when I was on my way to a  job I had that came with a verbally abusive boss. I was about a year in when  I had to run off the train during rush hour at Union Square which is one of the busiest subway stops in NYC to stand over a wastebasket.  It was totally embarrassing and really gross to be dry heaving into an overflowing wastebasket in the middle of rush hour on a super crowded subway platform, so I figured I must’ve been really sick. I decided to walk the extra dozen blocks to work from there so I could pick up my laptop and then go work from home. The second I left work with my laptop, I felt fine.  Your unease and unhappiness might take  a different physical form, so be aware of whats hurting, when, and how often and I bet it wont be too tough to connect the dots. Its all-consuming.  If you find that all youre mustering up the energy to do is wake up, go to work, come home, veg on the couch, watch TV and complain and then you rinse and repeat for 4 more days thats a bad sign. Its a  really bad sign if it spills into your weekend, where youre lagging on Saturday and then feeling anxious on Sunday.  That means your whole life is revolving around this job, and even your personal time isnt  your own. Youve turned into someone you dont like.  My very own husband talked about this on my podcast. He knew it was time to go freelance when he found himself being short and frustrated too often with his colleagues, and complaining  about work too often with his friends and family. He didnt want to be that person, and he knew he had to take himself out of that situation. His mindset and stress level shifted exponentially when he started working mostly from home, as well as  project-by-project. Your family knows how unhappy you are, and you have their emotional and financial support. I get it were all independent and dont want to rely on anyone else. But when youre  this unhappywhen it shows up as stomachaches and nightmares and anxiety and crying jags and depressionthen let your family help you. Thats what they signed up for! Lean on them, remembering that its only temporary and taking action daily to find a new job and/or launch your business. Youll be back to bringing in the bucks in no time.
