The Pitot-Static System Powers Aircraft Instruments

The Pitot-Static System Powers Aircraft InstrumentsThe Pitot-Static System Powers Aircraft InstrumentsEver wonder how your airspeed indicator works? The answer lies in a basic ordnungsprinzip called the pitot-static system, which measures ram air pressure and compares it to static pressure to indicate the aircrafts speed through the air. And thats not all it tells you. This same static air system gives us our altitude and tells us how fast were climbing or descending in feet per minute. The pitot-static system supplies power to three basic aircraft betriebsmittels The airspeed indicator, altimeter, and vertical speed indicator. Components Pitot Tube and Line The pitot tube is an L-shaped device located on the exterior of the aircraft that is used to measure airspeed. It has a small opening in the front of the tube where ram air pressure (dynamic pressure) enters the tube and a drain hole on the back of the tube. Some types or pitot tubes have an electronic heating element inside of the tube that prevents ice from blocking the air inlet or drain hole.Static Port(s) and Lines The static port is a small air inlet, usually located on the side of the aircraft, flush against the fuselage. The static port measures static (non-moving) air pressure, which is also known as ambient pressure or barometric pressure. Some aircraft have more than one static port, and some aircraft have an alternate static port in case one or more of the ports becomes blocked. Instruments The pitot-static system involves three instruments The airspeed indicator, altimeter, and vertical speed indicator. Static lines connect to all three instruments and ram air pressure from the pitot tube connects to only the airspeed indicator.Alternate Static Port (if installed) A lever in the cockpit of some aircraft operates analternate static port if the main static port experiences a blockage. Using the alternate static system can cause slightly inaccurate readings on the instruments since the pressu re in the cabin can is usually higher than the main static ports measure at altitude. Normal Operation The pitot-static system works by measuring and comparing static pressures and in the case of the airspeed indicator, both static and dynamic pressure. Airspeed The airspeed indicator is a sealed case with an aneroid diaphragm inside of it. The case surrounding the diaphragm is made up of static pressure, and the diaphragm is supplied with both static and dynamic pressure to it. When airspeed increases, the dynamic pressure inside of the diaphragm increases as well, causing the diaphragm to expand. Through mechanical linkage and gears, the airspeed is depicted by a needle pointer on the face of the instrument.Altimeter The altimeter acts as a barometer and is also supplied with static pressure from the static ports. Inside the sealed instrument case is a stack of sealed aneroid diaphragms, also known as wafers. These wafers are sealed with an internal pressure calibrated to 29. 92 Hg, or standard atmospheric pressure. They expand and contract as the pressure rises and falls in the surrounding instrument case. A Kollsman window inside of the cockpit allows the pilot to calibrate the instrument to the local altimeter setting to account for non-standard atmospheric pressure. VSI The vertical speed indicator has a thin sealed diaphragm connected to the static port. The surrounding instrument case is also sealed and supplied static air pressure with a metered leak at the back of the case. This metered leak measures pressure change more gradually, which means that if the airplane continues to climb, the pressure will never quite catch up to each other, allowing for rate information to be measured on the instrument face. Once the aircraft levels off, the pressures from both the metered leak and the static pressure from inside the diaphragm equalize, and the VSI dial returns to zero to show level flight. Errors and Abnormal Operation The most common dicke bre tter bohren mssen with the pitot-static system is a blockage of the pitot tube or the static ports, or both. If the pitot tube becomes blocked, and its drain hole remains clear, the airspeed will read zero.If the pitot tube and its drain hole are blocked, the airspeed indicator will act like an altimeter, reading higher airspeeds with an increase in altitude. This situation can be dangerous if not recognized immediately. If the static port(s) become blocked and the pitot tube remains operable, the airspeed indicator will barely work and indications will be inaccurate. The altimeter will freeze in a place where the blockage occurred and the VSI will indicate zero. Another problem with the pitot-static system includes metal fatigue, which can deteriorate the elasticity of the diaphragms. Additionally, turbulence or abrupt maneuvers can cause erroneous static pressure measurements.

5 Signs Youve Lost Your Motivation at Work - The Muse

5 Signs Youve Lost Your Motivation at Work - The Muse5 Signs Youve Lost Your Motivation at WorkRemember how eager you were when you started your current job? Maybe you showed up to your very first kollektiv meeting and immediately volunteered for a special project. Or you developed a new process to replace an inefficient one that had been in place for years. Or you brought a fun team tradition to an organization that had an unbelievably dull company culture. Its that kind of boldness that can advance your career, because it proves that you want to make a difference, you care about the companys effectiveness and efficiency, and youre dedicated to the organizations success. But over time, that audacity can fade. You get comfortable in your position, and just like that, youre floating along with the rest of the workforce- elend necessarily doing anything wrong, but certainly not striving to stand out. In short, youve grown complacent.Have you lost that drive to succeed? Here are a few tel ltale signs that your spark is gone- and what you can do to get it back. 1. Youve Stopped Sharing Your IdeasMaybe when you first started your current role, you were intent on making an impact- so when you spotted an inefficient process or came up with an innovative new way to approach a project, you eagerly shared it with your boss and team. But now, its easier to go with the flow. Maybe your ideas were met with resistance too many times, or maybe you simply fell into the teams long-established processes, and now it seems that any change would be an unnecessary burden for yourself and your team. You may feel completely competent within your current workflows, but if youre not constantly looking for ways to improve, its clear that youve lost some drive to succeed. 2. You Dont Speak Up When You DisagreeWhen youre eager to succeed, you often want to let your voice be heard and opinions be known. And so, you enthusiastically speak up if someone presents a project or idea that you dont t hink will work. But maybe your dissent never got the reaction you wanted. Perhaps no one else on your team agreed with you- or at least, the decision-makers didnt agree with you- so the flawed project moved forward without any regard to the points you made. And no matter how often you spoke your mind, no one seemed to listen. Now, instead of looking out for your teammates best interests, you have an attitude of if they want to make bad decisions, let them theyll get whats coming to them.3. Youre No Longer Interested in Staying CurrentIs everyone else in your industry learning to code, while youre not convinced that you need to learn anything beyond Microsoft Word? Are you opting out of conferences and other events that would keep you up to date on important knowledge and tends in your industry? When you feel a little too smug in your position, its easy to let your job knowledge slip. If youre able to meet expectations in current role, why would you spend valuable time and money learni ng new skills or striving to stay on top of industry updates?4. You Dont Take aktionThink back to your first few weeks on the job. Any time anyone asked you to do anything, you got it done- with time to spare. You turned in assignments ahead of deadlines, you volunteered to help co-workers with their projects, and you asked your manager for added responsibility. Now, things have changed. Youve settled into your routine- but youve also grown a little lax. Instead of working ahead on your to-do list, you let your responsibilities pile up until the last minute. You dont have the time or, frankly, the motivation to ask if theres anything you can do to help your colleagues or manager.5. Youre Not Motivated to Advance Your CareerThere was a time when you felt like the professional world was at your fingertips. You were eager to rise to the top of your career, so you looked for every opportunity to advance- whether that meant proactively asking for a salary review or applying for a new pos ition within the company the minute you saw it posted. Then, things got comfortable within your current role. You know how to do your job- and do it well- so why apply for that newly vacant manger position that would require much more responsibility? Now, its easier to simply meet the requirements of your position and nothing more.If these sound familiar, you may be bordering on complacency in your current role. So whats the fix? It depends on your unique situation. For example, if your day-to-day routine is simply feeling stale, there are plenty of ways to make it feel fresh again- try these seven. However, its also important to recognize when your complacency is a sign that youve grown beyond your current role or that your company culture is hindering your growth- by, for instance, discouraging new ideas or dissent. In that case, it may be time to start looking for a role in a company that will challenge you and bring back your original tenacity. But one thing is for sure If you a llow yourself to remain complacent, youre likely going to grow dissatisfied while your performance suffers. For the sake of your happiness and career, learn to recognize these signs and start considering what steps you can take to renew that new job feeling. Photo of man floating courtesy of Shutterstock.

Why your 401(k) stinks

Why your 401(k) stinksWhy your 401(k) stinksThe trouble with retirement is that you never get a day off. Abe LemonsRetirement planning is a relatively new fad. There was a time when people just worked if you lived, you worked. In 1881 Otto Van Bismarck petitioned the Reichstag to create a government system to support the elderly, and the German parliament gave birth to retirement as we know it today (they cleverly pegged their retirement age at 70, nearly the same as life expectancy). America followed suit with the Social Security Act of 1935, creating an official retirement age of 65 for us Yankees. A couple generations of Americans went on planning for retirement by working and counting the days until they could collect Social Security and their pension. Then things changed. As demographics spun wildly out of control people working less, retiring more, and living way longer defined benefit plans went by the wayside. The Revenue Act of 1978 created the 401(k) and a modification i n 1981 allowing payroll deduction contributions launched a new retirement era 401(k)s are for private-sector employees, government employees have a similar 457 option and non-profit employees have a 403(b). There are now over 30 million employer-sponsored retirement plans with total assets exceeding $7.7 trillion. Its worth noting that IRAs (Individual Retirement Arrangements), which are often funded by old company retirement plans, also hold over $8.6 trillion. 1So, why are there almost $17 trillion inside of a plan that stinks? Lets take a look.TaxesOne of the main benefits marketed by 401(k) providers and accountants looking for a better current-year tax return is the ability to defer income. Its worth repeating that word, DEFER, as it is often confused with the word- savings. A very common saying is, Contribute $10,000 to the 401(k) at work, youre not paying for it, Uncle Sam is. Wrong It is true that a person making a $100k salary and contributing $10k pre-tax into their 401(k) has lowered their taxable income to $90k this year (notwithstanding other deductions). However, that deferral creates a corresponding compounding tax liability. Qualified distributions in retirement will be subject to ordinary income tax, not just your contributions, but all your investment gains as well. But you will retire in a lower tax bracketOr will you? Most of my clients want to maintain, if not increase, their lifestyle during the Golden Years. This comes at a cost. Affluent individuals may find Social Security, pensions, and retirement distributionsare sending them into a higher tax bracket than initially planned for. leid to mention many of your previous write-offs may no longer be available (i.e. dependent kids have moved out of the house, mortgage interest is paid off, pre-tax retirement contributions, etc.). Also, todays tax rates are not set in stone. With over $21 trillion of national debt 3, there is a slight chance tax rates could go up at some point. Retirees are o ften surprised when statements theyve been receiving for so long with a lofty balance begin spending like far less. Then Ill keep deferringNo, you wont. The IRS wants their tax revenue, so by age 70.5, you must begin taking Required Minimum Distributions. Failing to take your RMD can result in a 50% tax penalty 2This money is just for retirementIt certainly is. Unfortunately, life isnt lived in a laboratory and sometimes the unexpected occurs. 401(k) participants generally are not allowed to access their funds before Age 59.5, doing so may incur a 10% penalty on top of additional income taxes. Your plan may allow for hardship withdrawals and waive your penalty (i.e. to purchase your first home, pay for unreimbursed medical expenses, paying for college, etc.) Your employer plan may provide another option to take a 401(k) loan up to $50k or 50% of your plan balance (the lower of the two). Either way,be prepared to jump through some hoops or pay a stiff penalty if your household happens to need some extra cash.I can invest in whatever I wantNot really. 401(k) plans have limited investment options, typically confined to mutual funds and sometimes ETFs (exchange-traded funds). My retirement plan at work is freeNothing is free. A 401(k) carries administrative costs and its underlying investments still hold fund fees based on company and management activity. Some 403(b)s for school systems even use a Variable Annuity chassis that can carry even greater fees and restrictions. The 401(k) definitely has a place in todays retirement planning environment, offering several smart incentives like automatic payroll deductions and sometimes a very valuable employer match. Some plans have also begun offering a Roth option to combat some of these tax woes. But as weve seen, there are a lot of strings attached that a participant must be aware of. A smart investor must carefully consider market risk, current and future tax liabilities, and liquidity before making any investment decis ion.Bryan M. The IoT Improves Lives in Developing Countries

The IoT Improves Lives in Developing Countries The IoT Improves Lives in Developing Countries Wirelessly connected sensors, actuators, and other hardware have already changed global development workand signs point to bigger changes to come. A report by the International Telecommunication Union and Cisco Systems, called Harnessing the Internet of Things for in aller welt Development, cites estimates that there may be 25 billion networked devices worldwide by 2020, or as many as 50 billion if you count RFID tags. Its not a surprise that there will be a proliferation of sensors in the developing world, given that more people in those countries have access to 2G cellular network coverage than to basic services like electricity, sanitation, and clean water. What is surprising is the creative variety of applications that are already deployed.Connected devices and Big Data analytics are monitoring farms, wildlife, air pollution, stove usage, movements of populations during disasters, epidemi cs, and even trends in peoples moods through the words they use in tweets.Houlin Zhao, secretary-general of ITU, wrote in the reports introduction that there are tradeoffs implicit in the technology. Increased monitoring could threaten privacy and safety, for example. Threats include gaps between technical security and users perceptions of security and trust, or the detailed information yielded by geolocalization technologies, Zhao wrote. Moreover, the purpose for which technology and applications are developed does not always end up as the soleor even majorpurpose for which they are actually used. With these cautions in mind, the technology is progressing in interesting ways. Here are some development engineering projects that take advantage of the Internet of Things today.HealthLos Angeles-based Nexleaf Analytics monitors the temperature of vaccines during transport to rural clinics in India. A thermometer device uploads data to the cloud in close to real time via a cell phone text - or data-messaging system. A server then sends updates and warnings when the temperature hits certain thresholds. Performance monitoring sensors are installed on water filters in rural Rwanda. Image SWEETLabWaterIn Bangladesh, a team at the Robotic Embedded Systems Laboratory of the University of Southern California tested a network of 48 manual arsenic biosensors to monitor water quality. In Kenya, a team from Oxford University affixed basic accelerometers (similar to those found in a mobile phone) to water pump handles to monitor usage. A transmitter fits into the pump handle to deliver data via SMS.Portland State Universitys SWEETLab has produced sensors used in a variety of projects, including water pumps in Kenya, cookstoves in India, latrines in Bangladesh, and water filters for hand-washing stations in Indonesia.FarmingThe Syngenta Foundation of Basel, Switzerland, has deployed connected micro-weather stations through its Kilimo Salama (safe farming in Swahili) project. The s tations monitor temperature and moisture in the air and soil, solar radiation, wind speed, and other factors, and transmit that information to insurance firms, which plug it into digital models that estimate losses after weather events. The insurance firms make mobile payments to the farmers based on the models, automating and speeding the claims process. In India, 20,000 smallholder farmers use Nano Ganesh, a 2G-phone-operated unit that attaches to the pump of a drip irrigation system. An actuator operated by the phone turns the pump on and off. The farmer can see if the pump is getting electricity and if water is available.Disaster MonitoringFollowing the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami, the Indian Ocean Tsunami Warning System was created using kinetic sensors on the ocean floor. The sensors measure waves and water flow, and transmit warnings about kompetenzprofil tsunamis to disk buoys floating on the ocean surface. The buoys upload the information to government authorities via satellit e.Similarly, the Red Cross is experimenting with low-cost, solar-powered fire alarm systems in slums in Nairobi and Cape Town. The network sounds alarms and sends text messages to the residents and authorities, and uses GPS to locate the fire.EnergyM-Kopa in Kenya built its business around networked devices. The company installs solar home systems at a discount and charges households for the amount of electricity that they use. The system cuts off the power if the meter runs out, and users can buy more with mobile payments. M-Kopa can remotely monitor the health of its systems and make repairs as needed.Rob Goodier is the editor of Engineering for Change. Its not a surprise that there will be a proliferation of sensors in the developing world. What is surprising is the creative variety of applications that are already deployed.

Media Industry Jobs You Can Get without a Degree

Media Industry Jobs You Can Get without a DegreeMedia Industry Jobs You Can Get without a DegreeMany jobs in the media industry require a bachelors degree at minimum. But there are ways to get your foot in the door without a degree and work your way into your dream position. Knowing where to look for media jobs is just as important as applying for the positions that will launch your media career Social Media Manager More media companies are opening up entire departments to focus solely on social media. Many social media managers on the job today either have a degree thats leidlage necessarily in any field related to communications, such as Art History, but youll also find social media directors who dont have a degree at all. As with just about any job in the media industry, you have to be able to clearly communicate with others as the main requirement. Demonstrating your ability to manage social media can be as simple as starting your own social media accounts on Twitter, Faceboo k and Google and running your own social media campaign. Once youve established yourself as a social media expert, youre ready to seek social media positions as a freelancer or in-house full-time. Writer The netz has opened new career paths for people who want to work in media but dont have a college degree. Beginning your career as a writer has never been easier. Set goals for your writing career. Do you want to freelance or do you prefer a full-time position with benefits? Thats your first step in picking the right writing jobs that will give you the experience you need to command a hefty rate as a freelancer or a competitive salary as a news writer at a TV station. Build your portfolio with appropriate writing samples tailored for the job youre seeking. All of your articles on planting vegetables and flowers, even those you published for your blog, are appropriate for a gardening magazine. Your articles on the best bars in Seattle arent. Reporter Walking into an on-air ro le as a reporter is not as easy as sending in your media resume. Neither is getting a reporting job at a newspaper or magazine. Most media companies do want you to at least have a bachelors degree to even be considered. Persistence will pay off, especially if you are willing to start at the low end of the totem pole and climb your way to the top. For an on-air reporting position, its imperative you put together solid stories that demonstrate your ability to tell the story through pictures and video. For print media, assemble the very best writing samples you can create and include a mix of coverage such as a fatal house fire, community event, local government controversy and weather emergency. Radio Announcer Radio is an excellent starting point for people who want to work in the media without a degree. Become a morning show host or DJ, despite not having a college degree. Radio not only requires a commanding voice, but you have to also adapt your tone to your audience to become a radio personality who rules the airwaves. A news announcer will not come across on the air as a boisterous jokester. A morning show co-host wont use a serious tone to introduce the next block of classic hits. One way to get some experience as an announcer on your resume is to start your own podcast. Your profil boss can hear your voice, get a feel for your personality and place you in a position that best matches the media companys station formats. Camera Operator Can you spot a good shot when youre holding a camera in your hand? If you can tell a story through your pictures or video, you may ready for a media job behind the lens. Create samples of your work. Shoot compelling video that tells a story. Snap pictures that look like they came out of a magazine. You can use your creative skills to not only get you a job in the media industry but to climb the ladder to management positions in the creative and production departments.
